"The African Pediatric Respiratory Handbook"

The African Paediatric Fellowship Programme (APFP) in partnership with The Pan African Thoracic Society (PATS) is working on developing child & adolescent respiratory resources that will support teaching and training of child & adolescent respiratory specialists in Africa. Specific outcomes of this project include development of a paediatric respiratory curriculum as well as a paediatric respiratory handbook that is relevant to the African context.

'P.A.T.S'

The Pan African Thoracic Society (PATS) is a continental organization dedicated to improving lung health across Africa. It unites clinicians, researchers, and public health experts to advance respiratory medicine through education, research, and advocacy. Through initiatives like the MECOR program, PATS builds research capacity and clinical excellence, fostering collaboration to strengthen respiratory care. Its mission is to promote equitable, evidence-based lung health for all Africans

'A.P.F.P'

African Paediatric Fellowship Programme (APFP) is a leading pan-African training initiative dedicated to strengthening the paediatric workforce across the continent. By offering advanced medical and nursing fellowships in top African institutions, the programme has already trained over 290 child-health specialists from more than 20 countries, with the vast majority returning home to build new services, train others and improve outcomes for children.

Norbertta Makumbe

Chief Editor

Norbertta is a pediatric pulmonologist based in Windhoek, Namibia. Originally from Zimbabwe, she trained in Cape Town’s Red Cross Children’s Hospital and is passionate about pediatric lung health, medical education, and sharing knowledge widely.

Ngina Masu

Deputy Editor

Dr Ngina Masu is a paediatric pulmonologist based at the University of Cape Town. She has an interest in rare lung disease, Pulmonary Haemorrhage, Allergic diseases and Asthma.

Diane Gray

Senior Clinician & Expert Advisor

Diane Gray is a paediatric pulmonologist based at the University of Cape Town and Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Her whose work focuses on improving prevention, diagnosis and management of early-life lung disease, notably Bronchiectasis, Preterm and HIV associated lung disease. She has a particular interest in the use of lung function in strengthening respiratory health of African children.

This is our dynamic team with an invaluable role in this project. They anchor the editorial process for the African Paediatric Respiratory Handbook. With decades of combined experience in APFP programme management and fellowship logistics, they coordinate authors, reviewers, and timelines across the continent ensuring smoothness in meeting timelines and targets of the project.

Helen Meintjes

Program Manager

Hellen Meintjes, APFP administrative lead, oversees the African Paediatric Respiratory Handbook project. With 15+ years in programme management, she ensures seamless operations across African institutions—supporting clinicians through efficient APFP fellowship coordination.

Jolie Mapendo Mauridi

APFP Program Officer

Assists incoming/current fellows and the program with day-to-day administration and support services including fellows HPCSA registrations, travel logistics and conferences and overall finance administration. She has a BA in Psychology & Sociology (Cornerstone Institute) and a BSocSc (Honours) in Social Development (UCT).
